  1. Law stated by Jacques Charles in 1787, and
  2. independently by Joseph Gay-Lussac
  3. (1778-1850) in 1802, which states that the
  4. volume of a given mass of gas at constant
  5. pressure is directly proportional to the
  6. absolute temperature: it increases by 1/273
  7. of its volume at 0 degrees C for each degrees
  8. C rise of temperature. This means that the
  9. coefficient of expansion of all gases is the
  10. same. The law is only approximately true and
  11. the coefficient of expansion is generally
  12. taken as 0.003663 per degrees C.
